What Determines Preschool Fees? 7 Factors Behind Prices in İzmir

"How much does preschool cost?" is probably one of the first questions you ask. In İzmir — even just along the Narlıdere–Güzelbahçe corridor — fees for the same age group can differ two- or three-fold. This article explains where that difference comes from, so you can compare like with like.

1. Adult-to-child ratio

People are the biggest cost. A school with two adults for 8 children cannot charge the same as one with two adults for 20. When you hear a fee, always ask how many children and adults are in the room — that is what "attention per child" costs.

2. Programme and teacher qualifications

Approaches like Reggio Emilia, Waldorf, forest school and bilingual education require trained teachers, ongoing in-service training and investment in materials. Ask: "Are your teachers trained in these approaches?"

3. Meals

Cooking on site with fresh, seasonal ingredients costs more than catered food — and tastes and nourishes differently. Are breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack included? Are special diets extra?

4. Full day, half day or flexible?

Fees are usually quoted for a full day (08:00–17:30 with us). Half-day options may be cheaper, but for working families full day plus flexible pick-up is often more economical than an extra caregiver. Equalise the hours before comparing.

5. Building, garden and location

A campus with its own garden close to nature costs more to rent and maintain than a school on an apartment floor. That is why garden schools in Narlıdere and Güzelbahçe sit a little higher — in return your child spends a good part of the day outdoors.

6. What is and isn't included

Clarify:

Registration and renewal fees
Shuttle (we do not offer one; our fee is simpler for it)
Specialist lessons (English, French, gymnastics, chess) — included or extra?
Materials, stationery, trips
Summer school priced separately?

Two schools that both say "X per month" can differ a lot in annual total because of these items.

7. Payment plan

10 or 12 months? Early-payment or sibling discounts? What are the conditions for leaving mid-year? Ask for these in writing.

The real question isn't "cheap or expensive"

The preschool years are when the brain develops fastest. The right question is not "which is cheapest" but "for this fee, how many hours a day is my child truly seen, listened to, playing outdoors, growing with love?"
